The warp is made from slub yarn spun with Ugandan organic cotton and rope-dyed for a rich, nuanced color, while the weft uses organic cotton blended with recycled silk sourced from vintage Japanese kimonos.
Among the vast number of kimonos once produced in Japan, many can no longer be resold due to their colors, patterns, or condition. These garments are mechanically recycled back into fiber and blended with cotton to give them new life as a textile material. Subtle traces of silk color appear throughout the fabric, adding depth and character while giving the denim a softer hand.
Uganda, where the cotton used for the warp is grown, is one of the few countries where the cultivation of genetically modified crops is prohibited nationwide. Cotton grown in this environment gives the fabric an exceptionally pure and natural character.
Developed exclusively by MARKAWARE, this original denim brings together the heritage of Japanese kimono culture with high-quality organic cotton from Uganda.
